Canadians can soon apply for ETA required for U.K. travel

Soon Canadians will need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to travel or transit through the U.K., and the Government of Canada has all the details.
As of Nov. 27, 2024, Canadians can apply for the entry requirement — necessary for travel on or after Jan. 8, 2025 — by clicking here or downloading the U.K. ETA app.
According to the UK government, the ETA, which is being implemented for visitors who don’t currently need a visa for short stays as an effort to improve border security, costs £10 and is also required for babies and children.
It allows multiple visits to the U.K. and is meant for those coming for up to 6 months for tourism, visiting family and friends, business or short-term study; for up to 3 months on the Creative Worker visa concession; for a permitted paid engagement; and for transiting through the U.K.
The ETA will be valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. A decision on the application is usually made within three working days.
Those who are a dual citizen with British or Irish citizenship do not need an ETA and can travel with their British passport, Irish passport or other passport containing a certificate of entitlement.
