JTB Canada joins global celebrations in honour of Bob Marley’s 80th
Among worldwide events celebrating Bob Marley and the reggae legend’s 80th birthday, the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) Canadian team joined in activities across the country on February 6.
Perhaps the most auspicious of the tributes was a sold-out concert at the Jack Singer Concert Hall on February 8 where the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and renowned guest artists performed a show dedicated to the music of Bob Marley.
The event mixed well-known songs with deeper cuts, while highlighting his life and global influence.
This marked the first time the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra has performed reggae in a symphonic makeover.
The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra was joined by guest conductor Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser and vocalists Ammoye, Omega Mighty, Soji Joseph and Steele, while visuals for the show were created by Calgary-based art and production house FOREIGNERZ.
JTB Canada was a proud supporter of the event, offering a patron a chance to win a trip to Jamaica.

Not only is February Black History Month in Canada, but it is also Reggae Month – as Canadians proudly join our Jamaican counterparts in saluting reggae culture.
Additional Bob Marley tribute celebrations took place at a JTB Canada sponsored events such as karaoke night at The Real Jerk in Toronto, a tribute night at Lee’s Palace in Toronto, and a Bob Marley Birthday Bash at Bar Robo in Ottawa.
“Bob Marley is a national treasure to Jamaicans, and we’re thrilled to celebrate what would have been his 80th birthday, or “earthstrong.” In Rastafarian tradition, ‘earthstrong’ is used to refer to someone’s birthday and it honours his incredible life and connection to the world,” said Angella Bennett, regional director, Jamaica Tourist Board Canada. “In a time of such global uncertainty and challenge, spreading Bob Marley’s message of love and unity around the world is not only an honour, but a necessity.”
As part of Reggae Month, JTB Canada is also hosting a Bob Marley lyric travel trade contest for a chance to win three nights at the Courtleigh Hotel and Suite in Kingston. The deadline to enter is February 28. For more information, click here.
