5Continents showcases the magic of barge cruising in France
5Continents recently invited 20 Canadian travel advisors to experience the charm and culture of France’s Alsace region on a FAM trip from July 31 to August 6, 2025.
Escorted by Tammy Olivier, BDM for Western Canada, and in partnership with CroisiEurope, the week-long journey celebrated the art of slow cruising — and offered a fresh perspective on what makes barge cruising so special.
“Sailing through the Alsace region on the MS Madeleine was the perfect way to showcase the unique charm and intimacy of barge cruising” said Olivier in a press release."Our advisors experienced first-hand how the slow pace, exceptional cuisine, and warm hospitality create an unforgettable journey for clients looking for something truly special.”
The itinerary was designed to highlight how intimate waterways, authentic culinary moments, and off-the-beaten-path experiences can elevate group travel.

Advisors had the chance to see firsthand how barge cruising is ideal for small groups, themed itineraries, or travellers seeking a more personal connection with the destinations they visit.
Among the trip’s standout moments were:
- A canal tour of Strasbourg, the region’s vibrant capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
- A visit to the Antzwiller Inclined Plane, an engineering marvel for river navigation.
- A glass-blowing demonstration at Crystal Lehrer.
- A guided walking tour of Saverne followed by a visit to the historic Chateau de Haut-Barr.
- Wine tasting at Vins d’Alsace Domaine Bohr, featuring the region’s signature varietals.
- A private dinner at La Marne to savour authentic Tartes Flambées, a beloved Alsatian specialty.
- A stop at the Maison du Kochersberg Museum to explore local traditions and heritage.
- A glamorous gala evening with special guests David Boigne and Sabrina Greca.
With every stop, the group gained insights into how barge cruising combines culture, cuisine, and camaraderie at a relaxed pace — all while showcasing the unique allure of Alsace.
“I’ve been dying to do this! The barge experience is like an upscale houseboat,” stated Wendy Weir from Farmstead Travel. “This is a fantastic experience for a group, family, or even a corporate getaway for six nights. We are on the canals of Europe, not the rivers, where you can walk along the canal from lock to lock or enjoy a scenic bike ride. The food is amazing — it’s like going to a friend’s house for dinner, a French friend who happens to be a Michelin-star chef, serving 4-course lunches.”
“The excursions are off the beaten path, un-touristed, and customizable, offering a truly authentic experience. If you have clients looking for adventurous, authentic, slow travel, I think this is absolutely fantastic!”
Stephen Harper from Travel Best Bets called it a “fabulous experience.”
“Gentle canals passing through verdent green French countryside. Quaint towns, farms, castles as far as your eyes could see. Delectable cuisine by our personal chef, and such outstanding service by our crew on this intimate boat,” said Harper.
