Tropical Storm Franklin: travel advisory issued for Canadians

Canadian travellers are being cautioned against non-essential travel to the Caribbean coast of Mexico, as Tropical Storm Franklin continues to move inland.

The storm, which is forecast to become a hurricane by the U.S. National Hurricane Centre (NHC) in Miami, made landfall in the Yucatan Peninsula late Monday night (Aug. 7) with windspeeds of more than 60 mph.

Global Affairs Canada is currently advising against non-essential travel to the coast of Mexico, from Puerto de Veracruz northward to Rio Panuco.

According to the NHC, Franklin is expected to gather strength as it moves west over the Bay of Campeche, becoming a Category 1 hurricane as it makes a second landfall early Thursday.
