Tourism organizations condemn latest Turkey attacks

The United Nations World Tourism Organization and the World Travel & Tourism Council are among the organizations condemning the latest attack in Turkey this week, which killed at least 38 people and wounded 155.

The attack took place Saturday (Dec. 10), in which two explosions were set off at Istanbul’s Vodafone Arena during a soccer match. According to reports, a Kurdish militant group has since claimed responsibility. The latest attacks follow a string of bombings in the country over the past year, in addition to a failed military coup in July.

"On the behalf of the international tourism community, UNWTO conveys its heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims and expresses its full solidarity with the people and the Government of Turkey,” said UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai. “This attack reminds us once more that we are facing a global threat that requires us to work closer together to have a firm and coordinated response that engages all governments and the international community. Turkey is a leading tourism destination and we are confident it will continue to be so with the support of all."

David Scowsill, president & CEO of the WTTC, said "We are extremely saddened to hear of the attacks in Istanbul. Our heart goes out to the friends and family of the victims. Now more than ever it is important that public and private sectors work together to respond to the threats of terrorism. Turkey is a beautiful tourism destination and we stand by the country in these difficult times. We look forward to the time when the security situation stabilises and the tourism numbers start to build again."
