Suspect in Fort Lauderdale shooting to appear in court on Monday

The lone shooter who killed five people and injured a further eight at Fort Lauderdale Airport on Friday is being held in custody without bail, and is scheduled to appear in court later today.

According to CBC, 26-year old Esteban Santiago was charged on Saturday with an act of violence at an international airport resulting in death, in addition to weapons charges. Law enforcement officials confirmed that no shots had been fired at the suspect and Santiago, a military veteran, was unharmed when taken in.

The shooting took place inside Terminal 2, which serves Air Canada and Delta Air Lines, but a spokesperson for Air Canada confirmed that all its passengers and employees at the airport were 'accounted for and safe' after the mass shooting, according to the Canadian Press. Delta also indicated in a statement that its employees appeared to be safe.

Passengers on flights arriving at Fort Lauderdale from Toronto and Montreal were held off gate while the terminal remained close, and operations at the airport were suspended as law enforcement authorities rushed to the scene. Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick confirmed in an email that the airline was able to successfully evacuate passengers from departing flights onto the tarmac.

Air Canada and Delta implemented rebooking services on their websites for passengers scheduled to fly to Fort Lauderdale on Friday and Saturday.
