Newton heads north as tropical storm

Hurricane Newton has weakened to a tropical storm as it heads north toward the U.S., after making landfall in western Mexico yesterday.

While the storm brought strong winds and heavy rains to the region, including the resort area of Los Cabos, it sustained relatively minor damage compared to the devastation of Hurricane Odile in 2014. According to reports, two people were killed and three are still reported missing after a fishing vessel capsized in rough waters in the Gulf of California.

Newton is now on track to cross into the southwestern U.S., with flood warnings issued in Arizona, New Mexico and western Texas.
