India restored electronic visas for Canadian nationals on Wednesday (Nov. 22), ending a two-month suspension.

India's high commission in Ottawa confirmed the news on the social media platform X, sharing an application link, which can be accessed here.

The eased restriction applies to “regular/ordinary Canadian” passports, the commission said in a release.

“Holders of any other category of Canadian passport will need to apply for a paper visa.”

Last month, India eased some of its ban and resumed services for entry, business, medical and conference visas for Canadian nationals.

As previously reported, the ban was first introduced as relations between Canada and India weakened amid claims of India’s involvement in a Sikh activist’s killing in British Colombia in June.

A diplomatic spat erupted after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in September that there were "credible allegations" of Indian involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, B.C.

In 2021, 80,000 Canadian tourists visited India, making them the fourth-largest group, according to India's Bureau of Immigration.

G Adventures "delighted"

In a statement, David Green, managing director for Canada at G Adventures, said he was "delighted" to see the news.

"India still has a long way to go to get back to pre-pandemic travel numbers, but had made great strides over the past year, with numbers in 2023 surpassing 2022 by 131 per cent," Green said. "We are excited to be changing more lives through travel with our agency partners in this stunning and colourful destination once again."

G Adventures is in the midst of its largest sale of the year with its Cyber Sale, Green added.

"We have discounts across the vast majority of our trips to India with discounts as high as 30 per cent," he said.
