Yesterday, the German National Tourist Office (GNTO) held a lunch at Canoe Restaurant in Toronto as part of the Destination Germany roadshow, which also featured a trade event in Toronto last night and continues on to Denver today.

Joined by five partners – Saxony Tourism, the Bavarian Tourism Board, the Tourism Board of Franconia, Garmisch-Partenkirchen Tourism and Regensburg Tourism – the lunch was a showcase of all there is to see and do in these regions, regardless of the season.

With inbound travel for up by 5.4 per cent last year to 79.7 million visitors, and the Canadian market up three per cent in overnights, the expectation is these numbers will remain steady through to the end of 2016.

In terms of events, Germany’s annual Christmas markets – more than 2,200 of them across the country – will open up again in just a couple of months, and heading into 2017, there are a number of notable attractions, festivals and anniversaries that visitors can look forward to.

These include celebrations of music, such as the 200th anniversary of the Leipzig Opera House; the more than 600 palaces, castles and gardens in Bavaria, including the picturesque Neuschwanstein Castle, which welcomes 1.5 million visitors every year; outdoor fun from river cruising on the Main and Danube, skiing down Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak, or exploring wine regions, to the many breweries of Franconia, “Home of the Beer”; exhibitions highlighting the 500th anniversary of the Reformation; countless UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and many more.
