Dominican Republic sees increase in Canadian tourism
The Dominican Republic is seeing an increase in tourism, with more than 750,888 Canadians visiting the country in 2015, and 417,522 visiting from January through April in 2016 alone.
Dominican Republic’s tourism board is crediting the increase to its government’s commitment to investing in local infrastructure and development, such as building a new runway at Punta Cana International Airport to increase air capacity.
Improvements to the marina in Samana are expected to improve the appeal of the north, which is popular with eco-tourists and whale watchers.
Ongoing expansion of the historic port of Santo Domingo are underway, too, with a plan to attract more visitors to the colonial zone.
The big story out of the Dominican Republic in 2015/2016, the board reports, is the new stock of luxury hotel rooms that allow the country to compete with other destinations in the world.
The arrival of luxury brands such as Aman Resorts and the Gansevoort Hotel Group add to the other established brands on the island such as Eden Roc, and Riu Hotels & Resorts.
