Caribbean bracing for Hurricane Matthew

Caribbean bracing for Hurricane Matthew

The Caribbean is bracing for the effects of Hurricane Matthew, expected to hit Haiti, Cuba and Jamaica by tonight as the storm maintains its strength along its westward passage.

According to reports, Matthew (described as the worst Atlantic storm in nearly a decade) intensified to a category 4 hurricane over the weekend; hurricane warnings are in effect for all of Haiti and Jamaica and the southeastern provinces of Cuba, including Holguin, Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba, Granma and Las Tunas. Precautions are also being taken in the Bahamas and Florida, as Matthew is expected to make a turn north by Wednesday (Oct. 5).

A number of Canadian tour operators, including ACV, Sunquest, Sunwing and Transat, are reminding agents and travellers of their hurricane policies on bookings.
