Canadian woman shot dead, another wounded at Mexico’s Teotihuacán pyramids
A Canadian woman has died and 13 others were injured after a man carried out a shooting at the historic Teotihuacán pyramids outside of Mexico City, reports say.
Local media footage appears to show an armed man shooting from atop one of the pyramids, but details are scarce.
Reports say the attacker later took his own life.
Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, expressed support for the victims following the incident at Teotihuacán, one of Mexico’s most significant tourist attractions.
The incident comes just seven weeks before Mexico City is set to host the opening match of the FIFA World Cup.
Prosecutors identified the suspect as Julio César Jasso Ramírez, a Mexican citizen, but did not share additional details. Officials also reported that 13 people, aged between six and 61, received hospital treatment for injuries.
Teotihuacán, known for its pre-Hispanic pyramids and ruins, is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and draws large numbers of tourists each year.
A second Canadian was injured during the incident. Mexico State Attorney General's office have identified her as Felicia Lee, 26.
The name of the Canadian who was killed has not been released.
Authorities recovered a firearm, a bladed weapon, and ammunition at the scene, reports say.
President Sheinbaum said she is monitoring the situation closely and is in contact with the Canadian embassy.
