Canadian tourist dies after apparent accidental shooting in Kruger National Park

A Canadian tourist has been shot and killed in an apparent accident in Kruger National Park in South Africa, according to local officials.

As reported by CBC News, a local guide allegedly, and accidentally, discharged a firearm, "resulting in the fatal injury of a 69-year-old guest from Canada,” said South African National Parks (SANParks).

The incident happened Wednesday evening (June 17), local time, reports say.

"It is alleged that the 69-year-old male tourist approached the concession operator, who was holding a rifle, and asked if it was a real firearm," according to a press release from the South African Police Service.

"While the operator was demonstrating that it was a real rifle, the firearm reportedly discharged. The bullet struck the tourist in the upper body."

Local police said the man was pronounced dead at the scene and have launched an investigation into potential charges of culpable homicide and negligent firearm handling.

A spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada told CBC News the department is aware of reports that a Canadian citizen died in South Africa.

Consular officials are reportedly in contact with local authorities and are providing assistance. 

The victim, whose identity has not been released, was among a group invited into the park for a traditional "bush braai," according to SANParks spokesperson JP Louw.

"SANParks extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time," Louw said in a statement.
