Hortense des Dorides

French expat, Hortense des Dorides is an Ottawa based travel and lifestyle writer. Iceland, Utah, Hawaii or the Canadian Arctic are amongst her recent adventures. In her spare time, she likes to hike and camp.

As of November this year, the Meliá Caribe Tropical, located on the beautiful beach of Bavaro in Punta Cana, will be divided into two new entities: on one side, the Meliá Caribe Beach, for families, and on the other, the Meliá Punta Cana Beach, for adults only. The new renovations total more than $20M USD.

The Meliá Caribe Tropical is currently an all-inclusive hotel with 1,145 rooms, 450 of which are reserved for Level guests, scattered over a huge property with lush vegetation. The Level section, close to the beach, is for adults, while the one located next to the lobby is open to children.

Segmentation

After listening to holidaymakers' requests and observing an all-inclusive market segmentation, the management of Meliá Hotels International decided to divide the archi-known Meliá Caribe Tropical into two distinct entities.

"We want to physically separate adults from family customers for everyone," says Arturo Villaescusa, director of The Level at Meliá Caribe Tropical. "Today, at the Meliá Caribe Tropical, we have an adult section in the Level, but families walk around and sometimes find themselves in this section. In November, we will have two products: one for adults, with improved services and food; the other for everyone, but especially for families, so with a focus on children."

The avowed purpose is therefore to offer more clarity to travellers and segment two markets: that of families and that of couples / groups of adult friends.

Peaceful renovations

The Meliá Caribe Tropical was originally thought and built as two full-fledged hotels in the late 1990s: the Meliá Tropical, built in 1997, and the Meliá Caribe, built in 1999. Divide this hotel is thus facilitated since the facilities are already organized in parallel, one next to the others, from the beach to the lobby.

At this time, the renovations of the rooms are going well, with no noise heard when we visited in early May.

"It's a huge complex, so it's easy for us to close residential buildings to renovate them, while relocating customers to another part of the resort," says Arturo Villaescusa.

The fire that broke out on January 1 in a building near the lobby, forcing the closure of three restaurants, is probably no stranger to the decision made this year. Three brand new restaurants will soon come to the Meliá Punta Cana Beach.

Renovations will intensify during the lean months of summer and the hurricane season.

The official opening of the two new hotels is scheduled for around November 1st, 2018.
