StatCan: Canadian travel to U.S. declines in Aug. — car trips down 34%, air down 25%
New figures from Statistics Canada show that Canadian-resident return trips by air from the U.S. dropped 25.4 per cent in August compared to the same month last year, nearly mirroring the decline seen in July.
August also saw plenty of flight disruptions due to the Air Canada flight attendant strike. StatCan figures show that Toronto Pearson and Montreal Trudeau airports saw the largest declines.
But Canadians are still flying – StatCan reports that the number of returning Canadian-resident trips from overseas countries increased 6.6 per cent from August 2024 to 1.2 million in August 2025.
Canadian-resident return trips from the United States by automobile, meanwhile, saw its eighth consecutive month of year-over-year declines, the agency notes.
In August 2025, the number of Canadian return trips by car from the U.S. totalled 1.9 million, a steep decline (-33.9 per cent) from the same month in 2024.
Non-resident trips to Canada
As for non-resident trips to Canada by air, it’s slowly edging up, StatCan adds.
In August 2025, non-resident arrivals to Canada by air totalled 1.2 million, increasing 0.4 per cent from August 2024.
The total comprised 589,700 arrivals by U.S. residents (-3.6 per cent) and 609,700 arrivals by overseas residents (+4.6 per cent).
