TICO says 91% of Auditor General action items are complete

The Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) has completed more than 90 per cent of the action items assigned to the organization following recommendations from the Office of the Auditor General of Ontario.

In an update released Friday (July 3), TICO said 91 per cent of the action items directed specifically to the regulator had been completed as of May 31, 2026.

Overall, 72 per cent of all recommended action items stemming from the Auditor General's review have now been completed, while two remaining TICO-led initiatives are still underway and are expected to be finished later this year.

“Our team remains committed to implementing the Auditor General’s recommendations,” said TICO CEO Richard Smart in a news bulletin. “With each milestone achieved, we continue to strengthen consumer protection and enhance the effectiveness of our regulatory oversight.”

Recent work has focused on strengthening oversight of Ontario's travel marketplace through a more risk-based regulatory approach, says TICO.

Among the initiatives highlighted in the update are an enhanced risk-rating framework to guide compliance and enforcement activities, ongoing inspections targeted at higher-risk registrants, improved complaint monitoring supported by data analysis, and upgrades to internal systems, policies and processes aimed at improving efficiency, transparency and consistency.

TICO will continue to publish progress updates as work on the remaining recommendations continues.

The Auditor General's 2023 report included 16 recommendations in total.

Of those, nine were directed specifically at TICO, six were jointly assigned to TICO and Ontario's Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement, and one was directed at the ministry.
