Travel industry continues to support Nepal
Support for Nepal continues to roll in from the travel industry, with many companies mobilizing in the wake of the April 25 earthquake which has devastated the country and killed upwards of 6,000 people according to the latest estimates:
– Transat has donated approximately $33,000 to assist with disaster relief efforts in Nepal, which was raised through the company’s second annual Twitter auction for flights to 20 European destinations. The money will be used to provide immediate relief to local communities, with representatives from SOS Children’s Villages (the beneficiary of the annual auction’s proceeds) helping unaccompanied children who have been separated from their families and offering child-friendly spaces.
– Onkar Travels has started a Help For Nepal campaign through its Facebook page, in which the company is offering tickets to Nepal at cost (from anywhere in Canada and the U.S.) for those looking to help out with relief efforts.
– Collette will donate a combined $50,000 to assist with relief efforts. The company has made a $25,000 donation to Plan International and Collette is matching donations to Plan International from employees, travellers and travel partners up to $20,000 through May 14. Donations can be made at www.collettefoundation.org; donors are asked to write “Nepal Relief” in their memo. An additional $5,000 will also be donated to Tourism Cares.
– In just over a day, G Adventures surpassed its initial fundraising goal of $75,000; the company has since increased its fundraising goal to $150,000 and will contribute an additional $25,000. Donations can be made here.
– The Intrepid Foundation has contributed $200,000 AUD in matched donations and is continuing its fundraising campaign.
