Tourists killed in Tunisia hotel attacks

At least 27 people have been killed in attacks on two hotels in the Tunisian resort town of Sousse, after gunmen opened fire on tourists this morning.

According to the Associated Press, one gunman has also been killed in the attacks, which took place in the popular Mediterranean beach destination for both Tunisian and European travellers. While Tunisian officials have not released details on the nationalities of the victims, a local radio station had reported that the majority of those killed were German and British tourists, the report said. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The World Travel & Tourism Council is among the organizations condemning the latest attacks in Tunisia. In March, gunmen killed 23 people (20 of them tourists) in the country’s Bardo museum.

In a statement, WTTC President & CEO David Scowsill said "It is it with deep regret that the world again has its eyes on Tunisia.... Tourism is a force for good in the world with its great economic and social benefits. It is important that travel organisations and travellers continue to support Tunisia, whilst the government takes appropriate measures on security.”
