Southern Ontario airport traffic to double by 2043: report
Southern Ontario will see air passenger traffic in the region double in the 2040s, according to a new report completed for the Greater Toronto Airports Authority.
The Globe and Mail reported that the study found in 2014, more than 42 million passengers travelled through the region’s airports, with traffic expected to increase to 90 million by 2043. The current maximum capacity of southern Ontario’s airports is approximately 70 million passengers, the report said, adding that the study suggests the need for regional coordination amongst airports to encourage an integrated approach to moving passengers, while calling for increased transit links between municipalities to support that system.
According to the study, released at this week’s CityAge conference in Toronto, the projected increase in traffic is due to both population growth in the province as well as an increase in air travel.
