Porter Airlines is introducing a new entry-level fare class, catering to a growing market of price-conscious lesire travellers.

According to Porter, the new Basic fare is an entry-level product designed to provide essential services for passengers with definite travel plans, offering the lowest available price on select flights booked at least 21 days prior to departure.

"This product appeals to the most price-conscious traveller," said Michael Deluce, executive vice president and chief commercial officer at Porter Airlines. "The Basic fare will attract new customers who are looking for the lowest price. Like all Porter fares, it includes our award winning Flying Refined service."

In an interview with PAX, Deluce said that Porter began exploring the basic fare concept in 2017, focusing on the rollout of the new fare class over the last three to six months.

"The market has significantly advanced on these lower price-point fares over the last 24 months, with everyone from U.S carriers to Air Canada and WestJet launching their own versions," he said. "In every market, there’s a price-sensitive leisure component that can be offered an unbundled lower price-point fare to help drive incremental traffic. It’s something being driven by our entire network."

The basic fare is currently available on Porter's Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Timmins and Windsor routes, with the intention to make them available on additional routes over a period of time, Deluce said.

Key features of the Basic fare

  • One personal item, such as a small purse or briefcase, is permitted onboard; all other bags must be checked for a fee

All passengers, regardless of fare class, benefit from Porter's complimentary premium services, including beer, wine and snacks onboard, and lounge access in select airports.
