Air India tragedy still being investigated

It’s been 30 years since an explosion destroyed Air India Flight 182, killing all 329 passengers, most of whom were Canadians en route to New Delhi.

The event is remembered worldwide as a tragedy that authorities believe was caused by Sikh extremists, one of whom pleaded guilty to manslaughter in 2003 and was sentenced to 15 years in jail.

Three decades later, the RCMP has stated that the investigation in to the Air India bombing remains “active and ongoing”, according to an article by The Globe and Mail.

The story explains that authorities have not closed the file on what is widely viewed to be the worst terrorist attack in Canadian history, and that there is a team of Mounties dedicated to investigating both the attack on the Boeing 747.

The Globe and Mail says the RCMP rarely discuss ongoing cases, and that further information was not provided, although Bal Gupta of the Air India Victims Families Association, who lost his wife in the attack, told the media outlet that he had not heard from the Mounties since last year.

An Air India memorial will take place in Toronto today, with additional ceremonies taking place in Ottawa, Montreal and Vancouver.
