Name: Alison Berk
Business: Alison Berk Travel
Where do you live? Humboldt, Saskatchewan
How long have you been a travel advisor? Just starting my fourth year.
What is your specialty?
Cruising and all-inclusive packages. As I am located in The Prairies, direct flights to sunny destinations are always popular.
What inspired you to become a travel advisor?
I was at a crossroads in my professional photography career and felt the need for a change. As my family's designated trip researcher and planner, I realized my passion for travel and organization. It was the perfect opportunity to embark on a new journey in the travel industry, and I must say, I'm absolutely loving it. Helping others create unforgettable experiences and explore new destinations has been incredibly rewarding.
What’s the first trip you ever took?
The first trip I remember going on was a trip to Disney World with my grandparents when I was five. I still have the Dumbo stuffy! (He's ancient now).
What travel trends are you seeing these days?
Living in a small community, all-inclusive vacations are very popular. However, I have noticed a recent shift towards booking cruises, which I absolutely love to sell. Many of my clients have been asking and booking cruises for their future travel plans. Additionally, I have noticed a lot of last-minute bookings to sunny destinations.
Of all the bookings you’ve made, which itinerary are you most proud of?
Since last winter was really my first true winter of selling, I have to say that anything my clients came back and said, "You nailed it, we had the best time." That always makes me feel proud.
What’s the most memorable trip you ever took?
In October 2022, I went on my first river cruise with AmaWaterways. It was also my first time visiting Europe. I instantly fell in love with everything about the cruise, especially the way that Ama truly embodies the meaning of family. This experience opened my eyes to the idea that there is so much more to travel than just an all-inclusive vacation. It inspired me to provide my clients with truly unforgettable trips. Of course, I still love to send my clients on beach vacations as well.
Where do you see your business one year from now?
I have been steadily growing my business and hope to expand into more cruise bookings in the future.
What’s one new skill you’ve acquired recently?
Lately, I've been getting the hang of selling travel with confidence! It's been a journey, but I'm learning new things every day, and my selling skills are getting better and better.
What’s one thing you would change about the travel industry?
Commission protection! Last winter, I was involved in huge cancellations with one particular supplier and it was crushing to have the commission recalled.
What’s the secret to being successful in this business?
I think surrounding yourself with mentors, asking questions and having confidence is key.
What is your motto?
PIVOT
What is your number one piece of advice to other travel advisors?
If you feel stuck or something isn't working, don't hesitate to pivot and change your niche. Work smarter, not harder!
Where are you travelling next?
I’ll be on the Ruby Princess for Trevello’s national conference. I haven’t missed a conference since starting in the industry. I don’t want to miss the opportunity to explore new locations, meet up with colleagues, and most of all, see all the suppliers!
