The Dominican Republic has announced updated entry requirements for Canadians. In the update, dated June 14, the country’s authorities specify that the change is an exceptional measure and will be applied until Nov. 30, 2024.

WestJet Encore pilots have ratified a new five-year contract with pay increases that set a new standard for regional pilots and more flexible schedules. Ninety-one per cent of eligible pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), cast ballots. Of that total, 79 per cent voted in favour of the agreement.

An overwhelming number of screening officers at Toronto Pearson airport have voted in favour of strike action. According to the Toronto Star, 99 per cent of the 2,240 ballots cast (there are 2,800 Canadian Airport Works Union members) voted to set a strike deadline to “reach a fair and equitable collective agreement.”

Turkish Airlines has announced the expansion of its services between Toronto and Istanbul for the upcoming summer season. In effect from June 8 through to Sept. 28, 2024, the airline has introduced a flight every Saturday.

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring two storm systems in the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico that could put a damper on travel this week. The storm forming in the Gulf of Mexico is the most likely to develop and is expected to cause heavy rainfall in parts of southern Mexico and Central America.

Travellers at South Florida’s two major airports faced more delays and cancellations on Thursday (June 13) after a state of emergency was declared due to heavy rains and flash flooding. According to reporting from the Miami Herald, the Miami International Airport cancelled 284 flights and delayed another 132 as of 3 p.m. on Thursday.

More than 85 travel agents gathered Wednesday night (June 12) at Steamworks in Vancouver to celebrate the success of Air Canada’s direct flight from Vancouver to Brisbane. The event was hosted by Air Canada, Goway Travel and Visit Brisbane, and a lucky agent was awarded Air Canada trips to Brisbane as a door prize.
