After 13 years with the Barcelo Hotel Group, Judy Makara has left the company, PAX has learned. Makara was the brand's director of business development, covering all of Canada. Speaking with PAX, Makara said that 2024 would be a year of big changes, as she recently became a grandmother. Makara, however, isn't leaving the travel industry for good, telling PAX that she has accepted a new role elsewhere.

Carnival Cruise Line will honour global music superstar Gwen Stefani as the godmother of its new flagship, Carnival Jubilee, at a naming ceremony in Galveston, Texas on Feb. 24. "Carnival is taking it to the next level of fun while being committed to children's causes and supporting our military families and veterans," Stefani said in a statement.

Virgin Voyages says it will reroute its Resilient Lady ship to avoid the conflict currently taking place in the Middle East. In an update shared with media on Thursday (Feb. 8), the cruise line said it will sail around Africa instead of passing through the Red Sea. “We remain concerned about potential escalations in this part of the world over the next 12 months and the risk that this presents for safe passage through the region," the company said.

Air Canada Vacations is expanding its summer vacation menu, adding Grenada and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to its offer. This summer, Air Canada will connect travellers to Grenada with non-stop flights departing from Toronto every Saturday starting April 6, while flights to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines will operate on Sundays commencing April 7.

In 2025, Avalon Waterways will offer one, two and three-week sailings through Bordeaux, a hub of the famed wine-growing region in southwestern France. With new cruises on the Garonne and Dordogne Rivers and cruise combinations that also include the Seine, Saône, Rhône and Rhine Rivers, the river cruise line is increasing its France offerings by 30%.

ACTA is expressing its disappointment with TICO's recent announcement to increase fees. “Unfortunately, despite lengthy consultations with the Ontario government and TICO, our concerns have not been addressed, leading to this unfavourable outcome,” said Wendy Paradis, ACTA's president, in a statement Thursday (Feb. 8).
