The Government of Canada is advising travellers to “exercise a high degree of caution” in select areas of Mexico – specifically, regions around Mazatlán and the state of Baja California Sur – due to deteriorating security situations.

In recent weeks, there have been violent clashes between rival armed groups in Culiacán, Mazatlán and their surrounding areas, reads a travel advisory posted to the government’s website.

The notice says armed groups have stopped vehicles on the highway from Culiácan to Mazatlán and other major roads.

Travellers passing through Culiacán, Mazatlán or the surrounding areas are being advised to exercise extreme caution, limit their movements, monitor local media for the latest information and follow the instructions of local authorities.

Ottawa also notes that since April 22, the security situation has worsened in the state of Baja California Sur due to several violent incidents, involving shootings, arson, assaults and robberies.

The affected areas include Cabo San Lucas, La Paz and Los Cabos, which are popular destinations for tourists.

Local authorities have heightened security measures by increasing the presence of security forces and emergency medical services and imposing restrictions on the use of public transportation, reads the advisory.

The government has posted an “avoid non-essential travel” advisory for several regions in Mexico, including Jalisco and Nayarit. Click here to read the entire list.
