Jamaica Tourism Cares initiative supports hurricane relief efforts
Jamaica's Ministry of Tourism has launched the Jamaica Tourism Cares initiative to support hurricane relief efforts in areas impacted by Hurricane Melissa, working with the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) and several Canadian and U.S. charities.
The ministry aims to have the tourism sector ready to welcome visitors by December 15, 2025.
"Jamaicans remains positive and resilient through these challenging times," said Honourable Edmund Bartlett, minister of tourism for Jamaica.
"With the generous support of global charities and our partners, we will be able to provide the relief support needed for Jamaicans, including our workers and to help the sector be ready to welcome visitors from around the world by December 15, 2025."
The ministry is working with several charitable organizations to streamline relief efforts, including Food for the Poor Canada, Sandals Foundation, Helping Hands Jamaica Foundation, Breds Treasure Beach Foundation, Hanover Charities, Rockhouse Foundation and the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association Education Foundation.
Donors are asked to designate "Jamaica Tourism Cares" on their contributions to ensure funds support tourism-related recovery.
Donovan White, director of tourism for Jamaica Tourist Board, said the destination has received significant global support since Hurricane Melissa.
"However, the journey to recovery is far from over," he said.
"There are regions that have resumed operations, but there are areas of our country that need help. We are committed to supporting their efforts to rebuild stronger and create a brighter future for our communities in need."
Angella Bennett, regional director in Canada for the Jamaica Tourist Board, encouraged continued travel bookings alongside donation support.
"We want to reassure visitors, those who had trips planned or were planning to come visit us soon, that Jamaica is safe, prepared and eager to accept guests," she said.
"We look forward to welcoming you!"
The Jamaica Tourist Board will host a benefit concert, Harmonies of Hope, on December 10 at Meridian Performing Arts Centre in North York.
Doors open at 6 p.m. with the show beginning at 7 p.m., followed by a reception.
