Hawaii spared as Lane downgraded to tropical depression

While Hawaii was spared the worst of the since-downgraded Tropical Depression Lane, the storm managed to dump more than four feet of rain on the Big Island over the weekend, washing out roads and flooding homes and buildings.

The storm, which was previously a Category 5 hurricane, lost much of its power as it headed toward Hawaii last week. Residents of some neighbourhoods have been evacuated following the heavy rains, while in one case, a brush fire caused the evacuation of visitors in Maui’s resort area of Laihana. Landslides have also been reported in some areas, a hazard which authorities continue to monitor.

No casualties have been reported as a result of the storm.
