Danke, Deutschland: Germany among most popular destinations for Canadian travellers
Germany continues to become more popular among Canadian travellers, with the European country now ranking fourth on their list of preferred destinations.
In 2023, Canadians spent 643,662 nights in the European country compared to 485,348 the year before, a 32.6 per cent increase, according to the German National Tour Office.
The recovery rate for overnight stays between 2019 and 2023 is 87.7 per cent, signalling a resilient bounce-back in tourism after the challenges faced in recent years.
During a press conference in Toronto on April 16, Anja Brokjans, director of Canada at the German National Tourist Office, emphasized Germany’s dedication to sustainability in tourism, a concern she says is of top priority to Canadian travellers.
“As we strive for environmentally friendly tourism, Germany boasts more than 3,000 certified hotels and catering providers, placing a strong emphasis on sustainable management,” she said.
Germany's commitment to sustainability is further highlighted by its 58,000 e-charging stations for electric vehicles.
The Green Cities initiative showcases Germany’s dedication to climate-friendly urban spaces, with 17 cities boasting green spaces that cover at least 80 per cent of their land.
Germany also offers the Germany-Train-Ticket for €49 a month on public transport, providing an affordable and eco-friendly way to travel within the country.
Overnight stays by Canadians in Germany were already on the rise before 2023.
The country saw a 253 per cent increase in overnight stays by Canadians in 2022 compared to the previous year, according to data released by the German National Tourist Board (GNTB).
