Cuba could be next to legalize same-sex marriage

Although Cuba's constitution still prohibits gay marriage, steps are in order to make the Caribbean nation the latest country in Latin America to approve same-sex unions.

Back in July, the National Assembly signed off on a new constitution, known as the Magna Carta, which stated that marriage is “the consensual union of two people, regardless of gender."

Eloy Govea, director for the Cuba Tourist Board of Canada, welcomed the news.

"While the new constitution is still in the voting process, Cuba certainly stands out in terms of inclusiveness and doesn’t stop to make progress," Govea told PAX. "The increasing awareness and embracing of the LGBT community in Cuba, will inevitably lead to that inclusiveness being part of our laws."

LGBT hotels opening soon

The Muthu Rainbow Beach Hotel a five-star hotel located in Playa Playuelas, next to Cayo Guillermo, is also open, and brands itself as an LGBT+ hotel. It will include 248 rooms, five restaurants, three bars, an entertainment room and LGBT+ events.
