Intrepid launches emergency appeal after 7.4-magnitude earthquake strikes Colombia

Intrepid Travel has launched an emergency appeal to support communities in Western Colombia following a magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck the region on Aug. 11.

The appeal, launched through the company’s not-for-profit, The Intrepid Foundation, will raise funds for communities impacted by the disaster, which has killed hundreds of people and injured dozens more. Rescue efforts are continuing to reach people trapped beneath the rubble.

Funds raised will go directly toward relief efforts, including essential medical supplies for emergency care, food and lodging for volunteer medical staff, and airplane fuel to transport volunteers and supplies to areas where they are most needed.

The Intrepid Foundation has established the appeal in partnership with Colombia-based NGO Patrulla Aérea Civil Colombiana (PAC), which is providing on-the-ground support to affected communities.

PAC provides free medical services to remote areas across Colombia and has access to volunteer pilots, medical professionals and aircraft to assist with the emergency response.

The Intrepid Foundation will match donations to the appeal up to CAD $30,000.

“Thousands of people across Western Colombia, including Cali, Pereira, Quibdó and Chocó Department are facing loss, uncertainty and urgent needs – especially access to medical care. In moments like this, solidarity can make an immediate and meaningful difference. We are asking for your help, by donating if you are able, or by sharing the appeal with your networks” said Hernan Acevedo, general manager, Colombia at Intrepid.

Intrepid began operating in Colombia in 2019 and currently runs eight trips in the country. The company also has a local office in Bogota with eight full-time team members.

The Intrepid Foundation has partnered with PAC for three years.

“By giving to this appeal, the international travel community can directly contribute to the humanitarian relief efforts, supplying immediate medical needs to communities impacted by this devastating earthquake, while supporting a locally led NGO that is deeply rooted in the community and trusted by the local people.” said Biheng Zhang, general manager of The Intrepid Foundation, in a press release. 

Meanwhile, Intrepid has confirmed that its travellers and staff in Colombia are safe and that trips in the country continue to operate.

Groups currently travelling in Western Colombia are being rerouted away from affected areas and provided with alternative itineraries and inclusions.

Intrepid said trips will resume in affected regions at the earliest opportunity so local communities can continue to benefit from the economic support generated by tourism.
