Football fever: G Adventures taps into fans’ matchday obsession

G Adventures is tapping into the passion – and occasional chaos – of football fandom with a new collection of small-group trips built around some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

The adventure operator has launched Away Games, a premium sports travel series combining guaranteed match tickets with local cultural experiences in football hotspots including London, Manchester, Madrid and Barcelona.

It comes alongside new global research from G Adventures highlighting just how seriously fans take the sport — and some of the concerns that can make travelling abroad for a match stressful.

According to the findings, 62 per cent of football fans have cried tears of joy over a win, while half have cried over a loss. Another 57 per cent say they feel more like their true selves when surrounded by fellow football fans than they do at work or with family.

And when a championship is on the line, some fans are willing to make sacrifices.

Some 45 per cent said they would play hooky from work to watch a major game, while 34 per cent would give up alcohol for six months if it guaranteed their club a league championship. Another 29 per cent would ditch social media for three months and 24 per cent would shave their heads.

But the research also points to football’s role in creating community. Almost 70 per cent of fans said the sport gives them a sense of belonging and makes them feel less lonely, while 75 per cent have made friends with strangers through football.

Meanwhile, 64 per cent said they would travel with a group of strangers if everyone supported the same club.

Tackling ticket scams & travel anxiety

Interest in travelling internationally for football is strong, with 69 per cent of fans saying their wanderlust was fuelled by the recent 2026 World Cup.

But arranging an overseas football trip can also come with concerns.

G Adventures found that 41 per cent of fans fear being scammed with fake reseller tickets, while 32 per cent worry about language barriers. Thirty per cent are anxious about navigating unfamiliar transit systems alone, while the same percentage worry about accidentally walking into a hostile rival supporters’ pub.

Another 18 per cent worry about mistakenly buying tickets in the opposing team’s home section.

Away Games is designed to address those concerns by combining guaranteed VIP or premium match tickets with small-group travel and locally-led experiences.

Each trip is accompanied by a football-focused G Adventures Chief Experience Officer (CEO), who serves as a local guide and ticket-keeper while introducing travellers to neighbourhood pubs, local culture and grassroots lower-league matches.

“At G Adventures, we’ve always known that travel is about human connection, and there’s no community on Earth more passionate, emotional, and united than football fans,” said Yves Marceau, VP of Product at G Adventures, in a press release.

“Our research shows fans crave that feeling of belonging, but booking a dream match abroad on your own can feel like a high-stakes gamble. Nobody wants to buy a fake ticket or end up in the wrong supporter section in a city they don't know. Away Games solves the pain points causing fans to hesitate. We handle the access, the logistics, and the safety, leaving fans free to experience the magic of the match alongside a built-in community.”

Real Madrid, Arsenal, Chelsea & more

The initial Away Games lineup features trips centred around Real Madrid, Arsenal FC, Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona, Manchester City and Manchester United.

The Real Madrid: Pitch to Plaza itinerary includes a match at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium with access to the Bernabéu Market hospitality area, along with a lower-division Spanish league match and a food tour through Madrid.

In London, Arsenal FC: The Pride of North London includes guaranteed Club Level seating at Emirates Stadium and VIP lounge access, while Chelsea FC: West London to Pitch City features pitchside access before kickoff, premium seating, a chef’s table dinner and a complimentary bar shared with a Chelsea FC legend.

The FC Barcelona: The Pride of Catalonia itinerary pairs Category A match tickets with a stadium tour, tapas and wine experience and a visit to the historic Font de Canaletes celebration site on La Rambla.

Manchester is represented by trips built around both of the city’s powerhouse clubs.

The Manchester City itinerary includes executive middle-tier seating at Etihad Stadium with access to the 93:20 executive lounge, while the Manchester United experience includes luxury padded seats at Old Trafford and visits to the dressing room, tunnel and pitchside dugouts.

Both trips also take travellers beyond the stadium to explore Manchester’s food, culture and supporter scene.

Away Games trips are on sale now, with the first departures beginning in October 2026 and running through May 2027.
