6.4 magnitude earthquake hits Caribbean

An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale hit 131 km northeast of Bathsheba, Barbados on July 16, according to the U.S. Geological Survey’s website.

The tremors occurred around 11:15 a.m. ET, and though it is estimated that as many as 1 million people felt the quake – the jolt reached those in Barbados, St. Lucia, Martinique, Trinidad and Tobago, Guadeloupe, Grenada, Dominica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines – there are no reports of damage or injuries.

The USGS recorded a 5.2-magnitude aftershock occurring 35 minutes after the original earthquake.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has stated that the quake is not expected to generate a tsunami.
