Alberta to unveil rail plan connecting Edmonton & Calgary airports
Alberta’s government says a long-anticipated passenger rail master plan that could connect Edmonton and Calgary’s airports will be released in the coming weeks, reports the Canadian Press.
Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen says the plan is finished and an official announcement could be made next month.
According to Dreeshen, the plan will explore proposals for a high-speed rail line linking Edmonton and Calgary, including connections to both cities’ international airports.
Talk of rail links in this corridor has been ongoing for over a decade, and the actual development could take even longer.
Dreeshen notes that about 80 per cent of Alberta’s population lives between Edmonton and Calgary, emphasizing that private investment will play a key role.
Premier Danielle Smith’s United Conservative government initially unveiled plans nearly two years ago to create a new Crown corporation to manage rail development, citing rapid population growth and increasingly congested highways.
