“A true polar enthusiast”: Industry mourns the passing of Patrick Shaw
The expedition travel community is mourning the loss of a trailblazer who helped shape the course of polar exploration.
Patrick Shaw, a renowned business leader in Arctic and Antarctic adventure tourism, suddenly passed away last week while hospitalized in Ushuaia, Argentina’s southernmost city.
Shaw was notably president and CEO of Quark Expeditions from 2001 to 2010, and most recently he was CEO of Polar Latitudes Expeditions, a cruise operator specializing in small-ship adventures to the Antarctic and Arctic.
“Pat was a dear friend, a trusted partner, and a true polar enthusiast who helped us shape Polar Latitudes Expeditions into the company it is today,” the company wrote on its LinkedIn page on Jan. 17. “His vision, leadership and spirit will remain a lasting part of who we are. Our deepest sympathies are with Pat’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
“We also extend our sincere gratitude to the medical staff who provided him with such compassionate care, and to the Ushuaia community for the touching tribute at the pier.”
The company said Shaw’s leadership was “a cornerstone of our success.”
“He was a beloved part of the Polar Latitudes Expeditions' family,” the company wrote. “At this time, our top priority is supporting Pat’s family, our team, and our partners as we navigate this loss. Please know that our incredible leadership team remains fully engaged and committed to ensuring continuity in our service and partnerships.”
Shaw was also heavily involved in education, once serving as CEO of Blyth Academy, a network of private high schools in Canada.
“May his legacy live on”
Oceanites, a non-profit organization that specializes in open-source data on Antarctic ecosystems, also took to LinkedIn to pay tribute to their friend and colleague.
“Pat was not only a respected leader in the polar community, but a true partner to Oceanites and a dear friend to our team,” the organization wrote in a post. “His commitment to Antarctica, to collaboration, and to the people behind the work helped shape countless expeditions and relationships across the polar world.”
“We are profoundly grateful for his support of Oceanites, his trust in our mission, and the personal care he brought to every partnership. His loss will be felt deeply across our community.”
“Our thoughts are with Pat’s family, loved ones, and the entire Polar Latitudes team. May his legacy live on through the places, people, and purpose he so passionately served.”
