Signs of the times at Cuba hotel

Signs of the times at Cuba hotel

The signs of easing diplomatic relations between Cuba and the U.S. became literal this week, as a Four Points by Sheraton sign went up outside the Gaviota 5th Avenue Hotel in Havana, making it the first hotel to be operated under a U.S. brand in the country since 1959.

Reuters reported that the property, part of Starwood’s recent Cuban property deal, will remain open as renovations take place over the next few months. Another property in the deal, the Gran Caribe Inglaterra Hotel, will begin operations under Starwood’s Luxury Collection brand on Aug. 31.

Starwood is the first U.S. hotel chain to make large investments in Cuba since 1959.
