RIU Hotels & Resorts opens first Canadian property in Toronto
RIU Hotels & Resorts has marked a new milestone with the opening of its first Canadian property, the Riu Plaza Toronto.
The newly built four-star hotel offers 352 rooms in the heart of the city’s Entertainment District.
The project consists of two twin skyscrapers, each 49 floors.
RIU occupies 23 floors of one tower, while the remainder has been developed for housing.
The building’s design features a brick base that reflects the neighbouring 18th-century heritage homes, with a glass structure rising above to give the complex a modern profile.
Inside, the ground floor houses the main lobby and a lobby bar.
A second-floor restaurant serves the brand’s Plaza buffet breakfast, included in the room rate.
The hotel’s design blends light and dark tones with chrome finishes and beige accents.
Communal spaces include private seating areas in the lobby, contemporary furnishings, and a layout consistent with RIU’s existing urban properties.
Guest amenities include a 24-hour gym and a conference room that can host up to 40 people, targeting both leisure and business travellers.
The property is located at 30 Widmer Street, within walking distance of major attractions such as the CN Tower, Rogers Centre, Princess of Wales Theatre and David Pecaut Square.
Transit access is nearby, connecting the hotel to Toronto’s financial and cultural hubs.
As part of RIU’s Proudly Committed sustainability strategy, the hotel incorporates energy efficiency measures, including cogeneration plants that produce electricity and thermal energy, as well as water-saving and waste-reduction systems.
Canada has long been a key market for RIU, particularly for Caribbean, Mexico and Central American destinations.
The Toronto property is the twelfth hotel in RIU’s urban line, which also includes locations in Panama, Guadalajara, Madrid, Miami, Chicago, San Francisco, New York, Berlin, London and Dublin.
RIU is continuing to expand in major cities, with a third New York property currently under development.
