Nobu Hospitality expands into the Maldives
Nobu Hospitality says it will expand into the Maldives with a new development planned for Laamu Atoll, located on the private island of Munyafushi.
The project, developed in partnership with Sarat International, will be Nobu’s first venture in the Maldives.
Trevor Horwell, CEO of Nobu Hospitality, said the destination has been a long-term focus for the brand.
“The Maldives is a highly sought-after tourist destination that has long been on our radar for a unique resort concept,” he said, adding, “Before we embarked on this journey, we envisioned something truly special.”
Sarat International also announced a partnership with Sarat Investments, and said it is strengthening its presence in the Maldives under managing director Ali Ahsan.
The planned resort will feature 56 villas, including 26 one- and two-bedroom beach villas and 30 one- and two-bedroom overwater villas.
The design will reflect Nobu’s signature style, with clean lines, natural textures, and a calming colour palette intended to emphasize privacy and sophistication.
Ahsan said the partners are positioning the development as a new luxury offering for the destination.
“We are proud to partner with Nobu Hospitality to introduce a project that redefines luxury living in the Maldives, and equally proud to be partnering with Sarat Investments on this landmark development,” he said.
A defining feature of the development is an ultra-limited collection of 10 Nobu Island Estate Residences, each located on its own private island.
Ahsan said the aim is to create something that feels both distinct and rooted in its setting.
“From the outset, our shared vision has been to create a destination that feels both rare and deeply connected to its natural surroundings,” he said.
Nobu says each island residence will include luxury bedrooms and bathrooms, pavilion-style living and dining areas, and private beachfronts with direct ocean access.
The company also says each residence will come with its own private yacht for exploring surrounding waters, with owners able to access the hotel’s restaurants, spa, fitness facilities, and curated experiences by boat.
Horwell said Nobu is looking to differentiate the experience from more standardized resort models.
“As part of the new generation of Maldives hotels, we aim to set a new standard of rarity,” he said.
“Our priority is to create a superior island experience rather than follow a formulaic approach – one where design, world-class dining, and the natural environment harmoniously coexist.”
At the heart of the project will be a Nobu restaurant set on its own private island, with a bar and lounge serving chef Nobu’s Japanese-Peruvian cuisine.
Additional amenities listed include a full-service spa, fitness facilities, a diving centre, tennis courts, event spaces, and a main swimming pool.
Architecture and interiors will draw from Nobu’s Japanese heritage, with angular forms, dynamic flow, and integration with the island’s landscapes and ocean vistas.
Looking ahead, Ahsan said the partners expect the project to appeal to both guests and prospective owners.
“The Nobu Hotel, Restaurant, and Island Estate Residences represent a truly unparalleled opportunity--private islands that combine thoughtful design, exceptional craftsmanship, and world-class hospitality,” he said.
“We look forward to bringing this extraordinary retreat to life and welcoming discerning owners and guests.”
