The Fives Hotels & Residences offers luxury living to Canadians in Mexico
The Fives Hotels & Residences came to Toronto last night at the Cambria Gallery to provide more updates on its two signature properties, The Fives Downtown Hotel and Residences and The Fives Beach Hotel and Residences.
The Fives Downtown Hotel is branded under Curio by Hilton and is located one block from Fifth Avenue in Playa del Carmen, putting it in close proximity to some of the most popular shops and restaurants in the region. Both properties are located in the popular Playa del Carmen district.

“Our downtown location [The Fives Downtown Hotels & Residences] is a boutique hotel and our beachfront location [The Fives Beach Hotel & Residences] is a resort,” explained Sharon Shilmover, manager, Canadian division, The Fives. “It’s a five-star luxury resort, with 13 a la carte restaurants, swim-up bars, a spa, and many other features. Both resorts are unique, respective to what each client is looking for.”
A smart way to own
The Fives attracts clients from all kinds of demographics, including young families and retirees, usually ranging from the early 30s to the late 50s.
As Shilmover explained, The Fives is not a timeshare, and it’s not partial ownership.

“The properties are full ownership for clients, which is fantastic for anybody who is truly looking to have something that is truly theirs,” said Shilmover. “They [the properties] are fully managed for you or rented out when you’re not there. If you’re here in Canada, you don’t need to worry about what’s happening down in Mexico. The units come fully-furnished, and the management company takes care of it all, including the renters and turnaround. It’s a smart way to own, but also a stress-free, worry-free lifestyle.”
Working closely with the Mexico Tourist Board, The Fives is able to offer a new experience to Canadians visiting Mexico, who might be interested in more than just sun and beach.
"We always try to bring more value to what we are doing in the region," explained Cesar Mendoza, regional director, Mexico Tourism Board. "The Fives are promoting their brand down in Mexico, and so we partnered with Aeromexico as well as a tequila company [Altos]. Mexico's gastronomy is some of the best, and we're working with our partners in order to show people what they can expect down in Mexico."

The Fives currently work with major Canadian travel trade partners, including Air Transat and WestJet.
“One of our biggest airlines is Air Transat, so when a client books an all-inclusive with Air Transat, for example, they become a renter for one of our owners,” said Shilmover.

Getting there
Aeromexico currently offers year-round service into Cancun. Both The Fives downtown location and beachfront location are approximately 40 minutes from the Cancun International Airport.
“Aeromexico has received great support from both an inbound and outbound capacity,” said Michele Martinson, regional sales director, Aeromexico. “We started with 737s at one flight a day, and now we’re up to 800s and issuing two flights per day in every city. Aeromexico has been in Canada for more than seven years now and we’ve always partnered with our strongest partners, which are the agency community. We launch incentives throughout the year, and that makes us incredibly competitive and innovative and that allows us to react to the market very quickly.”
Aeromexico recently opened a new gateway linking Western Canada to Central and South America by bringing travellers through Mexico City. The airline has doubled daily flights out of Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.
“I don’t think anybody has better connectivity to Mexico, or Central and South America than Aeromexico,” said Martinson. “Many clients don’t want to go through the United States, whether that’s for political reasons, or simply because of the process, and Aeromexico allows you to skip that entire process. We still offer free drinks, free tequila, free meals on board, entertainment, and blankets so despite competition, the structure just isn’t the same. We’ve grown our business and constantly outpace our load factor each year by partnering with people who are able to support us.”
