Developers announce $2B project to build an Atlantis in Hawai’i

An Atlantis resort is possibly coming to the United States.

California-based Kam Sang Company has purchased two oceanfront parcels from China Oceanwide Holdings Group for $216 million to build the new resort on a 26-acre property that’s next to Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina on the west side of Oahu according to Hawaii News Now.

According to the report, the resort was originally pitched 20 years ago when former Governor Linda Lingle looked at plans with Ko Olina developers, but it was later scrapped

If this latest project goes through, it will be the first Atlantis property in the U.S., joining two other resorts in the Bahamas and Dubai.

The $2 billion development includes plans to have 500 hotel rooms and 500 condo units. It’s said that it will take roughly five years to construct.

According to Hawai’i News Now, local residents have shared mixed feelings about the development. Some say it will help boost the economy while others are concerned about parking.

The company said in a news release that its goal is to build out Ko Olina, ultimately generating about $10 billion in economic impact, and more than 40,000 permanent jobs.
