Bahia Principe to open a new Fantasia property this November

In December 2017, Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts announced that it is reorganizing its 24-hotel portfolio, reclassifying properties into four categories and segmented experiences. The new categories and segments will ultimately simplify the process for consumers to identify which hotel will best fulfill their vacation goals. PAX caught up with the luxury hotel brand for a full update on what can be expected for this year, as well as in 2019.

“We’ve got an incredible year ahead of us and a big milestone in many senses for Bahia Principe because this year, we’re starting our rebranding,” said Helen Montijano, VP sales & marketing Canada & USA Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts.

Four new labels for custom experiences

The new labels coming on board will include the Luxury Bahia Principe, which are the most prestigious hotels, the Grand Bahia Principe, which are five-star hotels, the Sunlight Bahia Principe, which are four-star hotels, and the Fantasia brand, which has been newly launched and focuses on family-centred travel.

“In November, we will be opening our second Fantasia in Spain, the Fantasia Bahia Principe Tenerife and within the new branding, we’ll be introducing a new concept that defines the labels of the new hotels, and we’re going to give the travel agent community a better and more unified idea of what can be experienced in each of the hotels,” Montijano explained. “These labels, or what we’re going to be calling our Experiences, organize the hotels by Treasure hotels (unique locations); our Escapes hotels (adults-only); and Family & Friends hotels (core of our portfolio). The 25 hotels in the chain will undergo this rebranding, but we’re not stopping there, so I’m very excited to share that on November 1, 2018, we will be reopening the Luxury Bahia Principe Ambar Blue. We are closing it for a full renovation this year in June, and it will reopen on November 1 renamed as Luxury Bahia Principe Ambar under the label Escapes(adults only)."

Once renovations are complete, the Luxury Bahia Principe Ambar will feature 528 rooms, and offer modern furnishings and great amenities like swim-up suites.

Also in Punta Cana, Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts will rename one of its hotels. The Luxury Bahia Principe Ambar Green as of Nov. 1, 2018, will be called the Grand Bahia Principe Aquamarine, and will be the first Grand hotel by the brand that is exclusively adults-only.

“We think that by doing this, we will be able to diversify a lot more of our portfolio within Punta Cana,” Montijano said. “We’re going in the direction of being able to deliver to the travel agent community as well as our consumers, giving them a total experience with different price ranges within one destination.”

The introduction of the new labels means that Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts will unify all of its existing services, allowing travellers to enjoy the same luxury services in any Bahia property, regardless of the destination.

According to Montijano, there’s a big increase of interest in the luxury line, with people looking for more value while travelling. “The adults-only line and luxury line have grown very much in the past year, and that’s why we’re investing in this segment without forgetting up-and-coming segments, like “bleisure” travel; people travelling for business but mixing it with a bit of vacation,” Montijano said. "Multi-generational travel is also something we see more and more of; we’re seeing the whole family is taking such a unique opportunity of spending time together and turning it into a moment together. We started to develop Fantasia with this in mind: how do you mix teenagers, grandparents, and children together to have a good time? The activities and amenities under the Fantasia umbrella support people of all ages.”

The renovated Luxury Bahia Principe Fantasia will feature a teen’s club, a theatre, a spa for all ages, and even cooking lessons that encourage families to join in on an activity that makes memories.

Agent Rewards Program

“We wanted a way to say thank you to the travel agent community who have supported us so much over the years,” Montijano said. “When they [agents] have the confidence to recommend us and deliver their clients to us, we have to say thank you and give back something that is easily attainable and attractive.”

The Bahia Principe rewards program has been very well-received in the agent community and operates on a points-based system. In exchange for booking clients at a Bahia property, agents can swap their points for free stays, excursions, spa discounts, free nights, and more. Additional opportunities for points are frequent, Montijano said, such as when an agent registers for the first time, or when it’s their birthday. There are also monthly specials to make the offer more attractive. “We’re being very aggressive when it comes to the specials we’re offering on the market, and in the Canadian market we’ve already started our EBB campaigns,” Montijano said.

Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts currently has properties in Riviera Maya (4), Dominican Republic (14), Jamaica, (2) and Spain (5), with the 26th coming once the Fantasia Bahia Principe Tenerife opens Nov. 1, 2018.

As far as new properties are concerned, Montijano said there’s always an opportunity to grow. “It’s something we never say no to, but in the near future, there’s nothing confirmed,” Montijano said. “At the moment the plans of expansion are slated with the full renovations in the Dominican Republic, so I’m not saying yes and I’m not saying no, because Bahia Principe has been growing very steadily at an eight per cent growth year over year for the past 22 years, almost opening one new hotel every year, so it’s in the radar by all means.”
