Videotorial: Sustainability initiatives with AmaWaterways, the Heart of the River

Award-winning AmaWaterways believes in the words of Co-Founder Kristin Karst, “Travel is a force of good in the world.”

This belief empowers the river cruise line as they give back to the regions they cruise through – not only creating more initiatives to lessen their carbon footprint, but also helping preserve and share the local communities that AmaWaterways explores along their itineraries.

On AmaWaterways’ river cruise ships, current actions push to eliminate single-use plastics, minimize food waste and contribute positively to the preservation of the planet's precious water resources. Their modern river fleet has fuel-efficient engines, microfiltration and onboard water recycling, LED lighting and insulated windows to reduce energy.

The stunning AmaKristina was the first river cruise ship in the industry to receive the prestigious Green Award, which recognizes ships in Europe for their quality, safety and environmental performance. Since 2020, another 19 river cruise ships in AmaWaterways’ European fleet have earned the Green Award certification.

The innovative AmaMagna, featured in the video below, features solar panels and a hybrid engine system, allowing the ship to reduce fuel consumption and draw some of its energy from sunlight.

AmaWaterways continues to innovate and explore new ways they can enhance sustainable tourism, from enhancing environmentally friendly efforts on their ships and during excursions to fostering further connections with local communities and cultures.
