SH Minerva becomes first ship to receive DCA ESG Certification from Dream&Charme

SH Minerva, the first of three expedition cruise ships in Swan Hellenic’s fleet, has been awarded the DCA ESG Certification by Dream&Charme, an internationally-accredited certification body specializing in the hospitality sector.

The certification recognizes the vessel’s and the company’s commitment to excellence in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices.

As shared in a press release, Dream&Charme is accredited against ISO/IEC 17065 by ACCREDIA under the supervision of the Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy, reinforcing the credibility and international recognition of the certification process.

The ESG audit was conducted during SH Minerva’s cruise from Hiroshima to Otaru, Japan, between May 20 and 30.

The assessment provided an independent evaluation of the ship’s environmental, social, and governance performance, examining operational practices, supply chain management, crew welfare, and shore excursion experiences.

With more than 1,400 sustainability certifications issued across 19 countries, Dream&Charme has established itself as a global benchmark in sustainability certification for hospitality and premium accommodation, Swan Hellenic says.

The organization previously made history by certifying “La Dolce Vita Orient Express” as the world’s first train to meet DCA ESG standards.

By certifying SH Minerva, Dream&Charme has extended this vision to the maritime sector, demonstrating how ESG innovation can transcend traditional industry boundaries on a global scale.

The onboard audit was led by Giorgio Caire di Lauzet, CEO of Dream&Charme and Lead Auditor, who has completed more than 3,000 audits in 25 countries throughout his career.

His assessment highlighted the vessel’s comprehensive approach to sustainability and responsible tourism.

All about SH Minerva

Built at Helsinki Shipyard in Finland, SH Minerva incorporates a range of advanced technologies designed to minimize environmental impact while enhancing the expedition experience.

The ship’s innovative hull design contributes to reduced fuel consumption, improving operational efficiency and lowering emissions.

Onboard spaces are dedicated to cultural and scientific enrichment, including a fully equipped laboratory that supports educational and research activities.

The vessel is also equipped with state-of-the-art Zodiac inflatable motor craft, enabling guests to explore remote shorelines and access shallow or ice-prone waters.

These capabilities are supported by strict biosecurity procedures designed to prevent the transfer of invasive species and pathogens between ecosystems, helping to protect fragile polar environments.

SH Minerva’s diesel-electric propulsion system further strengthens its environmental credentials. Electricity generated by advanced Tier III diesel generators powers the propulsion motors, while selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology and urea injection systems ensure some of the strictest air-emission controls available in the maritime industry.

To safeguard sensitive marine habitats, the ship features a dynamic positioning system that allows it to maintain a fixed position using its own propellers, rudders, and thrusters without the need to deploy an anchor. This capability helps prevent damage to delicate seabed ecosystems.

The vessel also produces fresh water through a reverse osmosis system capable of generating more than 10,000 litres per hour, significantly reducing dependence on port-based water supplies.

In addition, SH Minerva is equipped with advanced wastewater treatment technology that processes both grey and black water to meet the highest regional environmental standards, including those required in the Baltic Sea and Alaska.
