PHOTOS: A look at Transcend’s first charter-only river ship MS Connect

Transcend Cruises has officially launched MS Connect, marking the debut of what the company describes as the world's first river cruise ship developed exclusively for the charter and group market.

The milestone was celebrated with an official naming ceremony on Aug. 3 in Dordrecht, Netherlands, followed by the vessel's inaugural sailing to Zaandam.

Media representatives, investors, industry partners and members of the MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) sector attended the event.

Marja van Bijsterveldt, former Dutch Minister of Education, Culture and Science and former special cabinet envoy for the Dutch maritime manufacturing industry, served as the ship's godmother.

Among those attending were Dirk Heijkoop, Mayor of Hardinxveld-Giessendam, along with Transcend executives Gregg Marston, CEO; Hans Rood, Chief Development Officer; Kimberly Daley, Chief Operating Officer; Matthew Shollar, Founder Emeritus; and Shawn Horwitz, Chairman of the Board.

Also speaking at the ceremony were Peter Burger, Managing Director and CEO of Den Breejen Shipyard, and Anna Silvesjö, Chief Executive Officer at Viken Group, the parent company of Tillberg Design of Sweden.

“With MS Connect, we are completely redefining river cruising for groups. Every detail of this ship has been purpose-built for meetings, incentives, conferences and exclusive events. Our goal was to create a flexible, premium and sustainable platform that meets the needs of today’s event organizers while delivering experiences that simply cannot be replicated on land,” said Gregg Marston, CEO of Transcend Cruises, in a statement.

Designed for the MICE market

Designed specifically for the MICE and group travel market, MS Connect measures 135 metres (442 feet) in length and accommodates up to 120 guests in 60 flexible staterooms.

The staterooms can also be converted into 30 two-room suites, offering added flexibility for charter clients and event planners.

The vessel features five configurable event spaces for conferences, meetings, workshops and networking events, along with audiovisual technology, high-speed internet connectivity and digital branding capabilities that allow organizations to customize the onboard experience.

The interiors were designed by Tillberg Design of Sweden, while United Waterways is responsible for operational management.

Sustainability was also a key focus in the ship's development.

According to Transcend, MS Connect was built using a circular design approach and incorporates low-emission technologies, including electric last-mile maneuvering, battery systems that replace conventional generators, and optimized fuel and water storage systems designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Its reduced draft is also intended to improve operations during periods of low water.

Onboard amenities include flexible dining options that can be tailored to individual groups, from fine dining to family-style service and regional culinary experiences. 

The ship also features a 240-square-metre wellness and fitness area, which the company says is among the largest on any European river cruise ship.

Four vessels by 2028

Looking ahead, Transcend Cruises plans to expand its fleet to four vessels by 2028 with the addition of MS Evolve, MS Create and MS Engage.

The company ultimately aims to operate up to 12 purpose-built charter river cruise ships across Europe's waterways, including the Rhine, Danube, Moselle, Main, the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal, and waterways in the Netherlands and Belgium.

The company is also expanding its European leadership team with the appointments of Mauro Tramacere as Europe CFO and Johannes Jungwirth as director of sales Europe.

Based in Basel, Switzerland, Tramacere will oversee the company's European expansion, while Jungwirth, based in Bonn, will focus on growing Transcend's MICE and group business across Europe.
