MSC unveils more details about Catalina Sugar Beach in Dominican Republic

MSC Cruises has revealed new details about Catalina Sugar Beach, the reimagined beach destination on Catalina Island off the coast of La Romana, Dominican Republic, ahead of its planned opening in November 2026.

Developed in partnership with CTL Maritime and Casa de Campo Resort & Villas, the destination is undergoing significant upgrades designed to transform it into a premier Caribbean beach escape for both cruise passengers and resort guests.

The enhanced destination will welcome guests sailing with MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys, as well as visitors staying at Casa de Campo Resort & Villas.

The opening coincides with MSC Cruises' launch of year-round Southern Caribbean sailings from its new La Romana homeport. Beginning in November, MSC Opera will call at Catalina Sugar Beach on every itinerary, offering weekly seven-night cruises, with guests also able to combine sailings into a 14-night "butterfly" itinerary.

According to MSC, Catalina Sugar Beach will highlight the island's natural beauty as a protected natural monument in the Dominican Republic while introducing upgraded amenities and new guest experiences.

Visitors will have access to white-sand beaches and clear Caribbean waters, alongside a variety of shore excursions.

Options will include catamaran cruises, snorkeling, boat trips to nearby Saona Island, and excursions to attractions such as the Cave of Wonders and Altos de Chavón. Guests looking to relax on the island will also be able to rent private cabanas.

Among the new amenities planned for Catalina Sugar Beach are:

• A signature open-air beach pavilion serving international cuisine and Dominican specialties, complemented by shaded seaside dining areas.
• Two bars, including a tropical palapa-style venue overlooking the ocean.
• A water sports centre with rental equipment for exploring the surrounding waters.
• Private cabanas and daybeds available for rent.
• Upgraded guest facilities, including changing rooms, showers and washrooms.
• A scenic walking trail through the island's landscape featuring educational signage about native tree species and lookout points overlooking the beach.

Explora Journeys, which is part of the MSC Group, will include Catalina Sugar Beach on select Caribbean itineraries after the destination opens later this year.
