MSC Group’s Cruise Division has officially broken ground on Sandy Cay, its new luxury private island destination in The Bahamas, as the company moves ahead with plans to open the retreat in 2028.

Construction and site work are already underway on the island, which will be located adjacent to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve and reserved exclusively for guests sailing with MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys.

The groundbreaking ceremony brought together MSC Group executives, Bahamian government officials and project stakeholders, including Pierfrancesco Vago, executive chairman of MSC Group’s Cruise Division, and Bahamas Prime Minister Philip Davis.

First announced in April 2026, Sandy Cay is being developed as a distinct counterpart to Ocean Cay, with a greater emphasis on luxury, wellness, relaxation and intimate experiences.

Plans call for pristine beaches and secluded spaces alongside curated dining experiences, private retreats and personalized hospitality.

The concept will also emphasize the island’s natural surroundings, with MSC positioning Sandy Cay as an escape that connects guests with the ocean while maintaining the environmental approach established at neighbouring Ocean Cay.

The development represents another step in MSC Group’s long-term investment in The Bahamas and its strategy of expanding the cruise experience beyond the ship.

Ocean Cay upgrades on the way

MSC is also planning a series of enhancements at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

Upcoming additions will include more dining venues, new beach concepts geared toward families and adults, expanded relaxation areas and immersive experiences designed to give guests a deeper connection to marine conservation.

The company says the enhancements are intended to evolve the private island experience alongside changing guest expectations while preserving its natural environment.

Once Sandy Cay opens in 2028, MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys guests will have access to two neighbouring but distinct private island experiences in The Bahamas.

While Ocean Cay will continue offering a mix of beaches, family activities and nature-focused experiences, Sandy Cay will provide a more intimate, luxury-oriented escape centred on wellness, privacy and elevated hospitality.

Together, the two destinations will form a growing part of MSC Group’s strategy to more closely connect its onboard cruise experience with its offerings ashore.
