Holland America unveils new Ocean Bar as $500M fleet evolution begins
Holland America Line is giving its Ocean Bar a new look aboard Oosterdam, blending the glamour of classic ocean travel with expanded live entertainment, refreshed lounge spaces and a redesigned layout.
The revamped venue is part of Holland America Evolution, the cruise line’s sweeping fleet enhancement program that will ultimately update all six of its Vista Class and Signature Class ships.
Inspired by the golden age of ocean travel, Oosterdam’s new Ocean Bar will feature a redesigned stage capable of hosting a broader mix of programming, including regional soloists, pianists, Vivace Strings performances and late-night cabaret.
The bar itself is also being relocated to create a stronger connection between guests and performers, while refreshed seating and lounge areas aim to make the venue suitable for everything from cocktails and live music to late-night conversation.
"With the new Ocean Bar, we wanted to draw on the qualities that have made travel by sea so enduring, from its sense of elegance and occasion to the connections created along the way," said Michael Stendebach, senior vice president of food, beverage and rooms division for Holland America Line, in a press release.
"Inspired by our maritime heritage, including design details drawn from Rotterdam V, this reimagined venue creates a setting where guests can gather for a cocktail, enjoy live music and immerse themselves in the refined elegance that has always been part of the Holland America experience."
A nod to classic cruising
Design-wise, the new Ocean Bar will combine Art Deco elements with subtle nautical influences.
Custom furnishings developed for the space take inspiration from vintage travel trunks and luggage, with leather accents offering another nod to the romance of classic ocean voyages.
Sustainability also plays a role in the redesign.
Rather than replacing existing lounge furniture that still has years of use remaining, Holland America will refresh and reupholster the pieces using fabrics made with recycled content.
Combined with redesigned seating areas and a more open layout, the changes are intended to preserve elements of the existing venue while introducing a more contemporary look and feel.
$500M fleet transformation
The Ocean Bar makeover is one component of Holland America Evolution, which the cruise line describes as the largest fleet update in its 153-year history.
The program will revitalize all six Vista Class and Signature Class ships, beginning with Oosterdam and Zuiderdam.
Holland America plans to invest more than $500 million across the six vessels, introducing refreshed public spaces, expanded venues, upgraded onboard amenities and additional staterooms and suites.
The enhancements will also bring more features inspired by Holland America’s newer Pinnacle Class vessels to other ships in the fleet.
According to the cruise line, the Evolution program was shaped by guest feedback while retaining hallmarks of the Holland America experience, including destination-focused itineraries, service and mid-sized ships.
Bookings are now open for Oosterdam and Zuiderdam cruises following their respective refurbishments, giving guests an opportunity to experience the updated accommodations, public spaces and expanded venues.
