A father bravely leapt into the ocean to rescue his five-year-old daughter after she fell overboard from a Disney Cruise Line ship returning to Florida, leading to a tense and dramatic sea rescue, according to passengers, social media videos, and a statement from Disney.

The incident occurred Sunday (June 29) aboard the Disney Dream as it sailed between the Bahamas and Fort Lauderdale.

Reports say the child fell into the water during the final stretch of the cruise and, without hesitation, her father jumped in after her. Passengers told CBS News Miami that he stayed afloat in the ocean for more than 10 minutes.

An emergency alert was broadcast across the ship while crew members quickly responded, launching a rescue boat and throwing life preservers into the water.

Although it was initially believed the ship was docked, passengers confirmed that the rescue occurred while the Disney Dream was sailing between The Bahamas and Florida.

Reports indicate that the child fell from Deck 4, an area that includes a walking track.

How the child managed to fall overboard remains uncertain, especially given the presence of plexiglass safety barriers.

Disney Cruise issues statement

Disney Cruise Line has issued a statement, responding to the incident.

"We commend our Crew Members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes. We are committed to the safety and well-being of our guests, and this incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols," a Disney Cruise Line spokesperson said in a statement to USA Today.
