Carnival’s first solar eclipse cruise gives guests a front-row seat to totality

Carnival Cruise Line has marked a celestial first, giving guests aboard Carnival Legend a front-row seat to a total solar eclipse from the open sea.

The cruise line’s first-ever solar eclipse sailing departed Dover, England, on Aug. 9 as an 11-day Carnival Journeys voyage visiting destinations in Spain, Portugal, Belgium and France.

The headline event unfolded on Aug. 12, when Carnival Legend sailed through the path of totality, positioning guests directly beneath the moon’s shadow.

Guests gathered on deck to safely watch as the moon passed in front of the sun, with Carnival providing special eclipse-viewing glasses to everyone on board.

The occasion was accompanied by special eclipse programming, while themed entertainment, beverage offerings and other activities are continuing throughout the voyage.

The sailing is part of Carnival Journeys, Carnival Cruise Line’s collection of longer itineraries designed to provide more time to explore destinations while incorporating special experiences at sea.

More eclipse cruises coming in 2027

Carnival is already looking ahead to the next celestial events, with three solar eclipse cruises scheduled for 2027.

Carnival Firenze will operate a 16-day Carnival Journeys sailing positioned for an annular solar eclipse on Feb. 6, 2027.

Departing Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Feb. 2, the itinerary will visit Rio de Janeiro and Maceio in Brazil, as well as Grenada, Martinique and St. Maarten.

Carnival Sunshine, meanwhile, will depart Barcelona on July 25, 2027, for a 10-day Mediterranean voyage positioned for the Aug. 2 eclipse.

Carnival Miracle will also get in on the action, departing Dover on July 29 for an 11-day Carnival Journeys sailing. The itinerary will include a dedicated day at sea for eclipse viewing.

The upcoming sailings build on Carnival’s push to incorporate distinctive experiences into its longer Carnival Journeys voyages, combining destination exploration with special moments that can only be experienced at sea.
