Avalon: cruisers prefer more choice, fewer people, more space
Avalon Waterways says travellers are seeking experiences that feel more personal, more spacious and more connected.
According to new guest research from the river cruise line, 62 per cent of travellers say they prefer cruising on ships carrying fewer than 150 guests.
Avalon’s Suite Ships, notably, welcome around 150 passengers on average.
“Travellers today are redefining luxury,” said Pam Hoffee, president of Avalon Waterways, in a press release. “Space. Personalization. Freedom to explore. Smaller ships allow us to deliver all of that – and more – in ways larger ships simply can’t.”
Guests don’t want to feel like they’re part of a crowd, the company said.
“A smaller ship changes how a journey feels,” said Hoffee. “We can focus more on the guest experience instead of managing volume.”
Flexibility, when it comes to excursions, is also important.
Nearly all Avalon cruisers (99 per cent) say having a variety of excursion options matters when selecting a cruise.
Among its guest preferences, 60 per cent favour Classic guided sightseeing, 20 per cent choose Active experiences such as biking and hiking, 16 per cent seek cultural Discovery experiences. and six per cent prefer exploring independently.
Smaller groups also allow for more time with local guides and more interaction with fellow travellers.
“The difference between travelling in a group and travelling with people you’ve gotten to know is significant,” said Hoffee. “That’s one of the most meaningful benefits of a smaller ship experience.”
