Travel from Canada to the U.S. continued to drop in May: StatCan

The number of Canadians visiting the United States continued to decline in May, according to the latest data from Statistics Canada.

Canadian-resident return trips by air fell 24.2 per cent in May 2025 compared with the same month in 2024. Additionally, return trips by automobile dropped 38.1 per cent—the fifth consecutive month of year-over-year declines, reports StatCan.

Compared to April's arrival figures, interest in U.S. destinations among Canadian travellers continues to decline, influenced by Trump's trade war and the weakened Canadian dollar.

Canadians are still travelling, however. Canadian-resident return trips from overseas countries increased (1.1 million, up 9.8 per cent) in May.

In May, the highest number of returning Canadian-resident arrivals per day was on Victoria Day (Monday, May 19), which saw 64,000 returning travelling, and the lowest was seen on Thursday, May 29, which saw 41,100, reports StatCan.

The number of Canadian-resident return trips by automobile from the United States that month totalled 1.3 million, a steep decline (-38.1%) from the same month in 2024.

In this regard, May marked the fifth consecutive month of year-over-year declines.

For May, the preliminary number of international arrivals (returning Canadian residents and non-residents combined) to Canada by air and automobile was 4.8 million, down 16.7 per cent from May 2024. It marked the fourth consecutive month of year-over-year declines.
